let the age of ronald is x (Say)

Ronald will be 8 times as old as he was 12 years ago that means 8(x-12)

In 30 years that means x +30

x+30 = 8(x-12)

Distributive property: a(b -c)=ab -ac.

x+30 = 8x-96

8x-x=96+30

7x =126

7x/7=126/7

x=18

Ronald was 18 years now.
