Substitution Method :

The system of equations are 2x - 7y = - 4 and 5x + 4y = 33.

Step 1 : Solve the equation 1 : 2x - 7y = - 4 for x since the coefficient is 2.

Add -7y to each side.

2x - 7y + 7y = - 4 + 7y

2x = - 4 + 7y

x = (- 4 + 7y) / 2

Step 2 : Substitute (- 4 + 7y) / 2 for x in the equation 2 : 5x + 4y = 33 to find the value of y.

5[(- 4 + 7y) / 2] + 4y = 33

Apply distributive property : a(b + c) = ab + ac.

[(- 20 +35y) /2] + 4y = 33

- 20 +35y  +8y = 66

43y = 66 + 20

43y =  86

43y = 86

y = 86 / 43

y = 2

y = 2.

Step 3 : Substitute 2 for in either equation to find x.

Equation 1 :2x - 7y = - 4

2x - 7( 2 ) = - 4

2x - 14 = - 4

2x = 10

x = 5.

The solution is (5 , 2).
