5.4 A 3 cylinder, single -acting pump is pumping water. The plunger piston has a diameter of 171 mm and a stroke length of 300 mm and runs at a speed of 230 r/min. There is a slip of 16%. (1 000 litres = 1 000 kg = 1 m 3 of water) Calculate the volume of water delivered in litres/minute.

For Single -acting pump

Number of Cylinders n = 3

Piston diameter d = 171 mm

d = 171/1000 m = 0.171 m

Stroke length s = 300 mm

s = 300/1000 = 0.3 m

Speed N = 230 RPM

Slip = 16% = 0.16

Cross sectional area of piston A = (¼)πd2

A = (¼)π(0.171)2

A = 0.022954

Volume of Water discharge D = (A×s×n×N)/231

D = (0.022954×0.3×3×230)/231

D = 0.02 Gallons per minute

1 Gallons per minute = 3.78541 litres/minute.

D = 3.78541×0.02

D = 0.07786 litres/minute.

The volume of water delivered is 0.07786 litres/minute.
