Given equation x ^2 + 5x -14 = 0

To solve the quadratic equation factorising it.

x ^2 + 7x - 2x - 14 = 0

x ( x + 7 ) - 2 ( x + 7 ) = 0

Take out common factors.
( x + 7 ) ( x - 2 ) = 0

 x + 7  = 0

Subtract 7 from each side.

x + 7 - 7 = 0 - 7

x = - 7

and  x - 2  = 0

Add 2 to each side.

x - 2 + 2 = 0 + 2

x = 2

Solution x = - 7 and x = 2.
