What is the solution to 5a + 11 + 3a - 7 = -4 ?

The solution

5a + 11 + 3a - 7 = -4

5a + 3a + 11 - 7 = -4

8a + 4 = -4

Subtract 4 to each side

8a + 4 - 4 = -8

8a = -8

a = -1.
