(-3/4)(4c - 4) + (7/8)c = 31

Take out common term 4.

(-3/4)4(c - 1) + (7/8)c = 31

-3(c - 1) + (7/8)c = 31

Distribute terms using distributive property:  a( b + c) = ab + ac

-3c + 3 + 7c/8 = 31

The LCD of 1, 1, 8 is 8

[-24c + 24 + 7c]/8 = 31

Multiply each side by 8.

[24 - 17c] = 31(8)

24 - 17c = 248

Subtract 24 from each side.

-17c = 224

Divide each side by -17.

c = - 224/17.
