the expression is 1 1/2 - 2 4/5
write the mixed numbers as improper fractions
3 /2 - 14 / 5
To Subtract fractions denominators must be equal.
Find the least common multiple (LCM) of the numbers (denominators).
5 = 1 * 5 =5^1
2 = 1 *2 = 2^1
LCM = 2 *5 = 10
Rewrite the fractions with the LCM as the denominator.

15 /10 - 28 / 10
The denominators are equal.
subtract the numerators of the fractions.
=(15-28)/10
=-13/10
rewrite fraction as mixed number
=-1 3/10
