5.4 A hydraulic accumulator has to deliver water at a pressure of 2.8 MPa. Calculate the mass of the ballast if the ram has a diameter of 300 mm.

Hydraulic pressure, P = 2.8 MPa 

                                    = 2.8 N/ mm²

Diameter of the ram, d = 300 mm

Cross-sectional area , A = (π / 4) d²

                                        =  (π / 4) 300²

                                       = 70650 mm²

P = Load/ Area

P = W/A

P = mg/A

m = PA / g

  = (2.8)(70650) / 9.81

  =  20165.14 kg

  = 20.16514 Mg
