 A fire helicopter carries a 897 kg bucket at the end of a 10.2 m long cable. When the helicopter is returning from a fire at a constant speed of 36.1 m/s, the cable makes an angle of 27◦ with respect to the vertical.Find the horizontal force exerted by air resistance on the bucket. The acceleration due to gravity is 9.8 m/s2 .

Mass of the bucket 897 kg .

Cable makes an angle 27° with helicopter .

The acceleration due to gravity is 9.8 m/s² .

The free body diagram is

So the vertical force on the body ⇒ mg  = F cos ϴ

897(9.8) = F cos 27 ⇒ F (0.891) = 8790.6

 F = 8790.6 / 0.891  = 9865.92 N .

The horizontal force on the body ⇒ Fair = F sin ϴ

 Fair = (9865.92) sin 27 ⇒ (9865.92) 0.4539

                                 = 4479.03 N

So the horizontal force exerted by air resistance on the bucket is 4479.03 N .
