1) The propose federal spending for 2009 was $3,518 billion. Find out the total amount federal amount to be spent on Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid. Round to the nearest billion dollars.

Social Security 20

Medicare/Medicaid 19

2) use the following facts to determine a commuter average speed

if she drive her car it take to quarter of a hour to get to work, rides the bus, it takes half to get to work, she drives her average speed is 10 miles per hour faster than the bus

3) Dried Apple slices cost $4 60 per pound, and dried banana chips sell for $3.40 per pound. How many pounds of each should be used to create a 10-pound mixture that sells for $4 per pound?

3)

Number of apples = A pounds

Number of banana = B pounds

A + B =10                ...... (1)

Sell prices

4.6 A + 3.4 B = 4(10)

4.6 A + 3.4 B = 40   ...... (2)

Solve equations (1) & (2);

A = 5 pounds

B = 5 pounds

Number of apples 5 and bananas 5.

Explain

3)

Number of apples = A pounds

Number of banana = B pounds

Total number of mixutre of both apples and bananas = 10

A + B =10                ...... (1)

For each apple selling price = $4.6 per pound

Selling price of A apples  = $4.6A

For each banana selling price = $3.4 per pound

Selling price of B apples  = $3.4B

Total selling price of mixutre of both apples and bananas = 10*4

4.6 A + 3.4 B = 4(10)

4.6 A + 3.4 B = 40   ...... (2)

Solve equations (1) & (2);

A = 5 pounds

B = 5 pounds

Number of apples 5 and bananas 5.

For solving equations (1) and (2):

From equation (1),

A + B =10

B = 10 - A

Substitute 10 - A for B in equation (2).

4.6 A + 3.4 B = 40

4.6 A + 3.4 (10 - A) = 40

Using distributive property: a( b - c ) = ab - ac

4.6 A + 3.4(10) - 3.4 A = 40

4.6 A + 34 - 3.4 A = 40

4.6 A - 3.4 A +34 = 40

1.2A +34 = 40

Subtract 34 from each side.

1.2A +34 - 34 = 40 - 34

1.2A= 6

Divide each side by 1.2.

A = 6/1.2 = 5

Substitute 5 for A in B = 10 - A.

B = 10 - 5 = 5

Number of apples 5 and bananas 5.

Let x be the Distance travelled by her.

Let the speed of the bus be S mph

The Speed of the car is 10 mph more than speed of bus = 10 + S

Time taken by her to drive car is (1/4) hour = 0.25 hours

Time taken by her to drive bus is (1/2) hour = 0.5 hours

We know that Speed = Distance/ time

Distance = Speed * time.

Distance travelled by car = (10 + S)*0.25

Distance travelled by bus = S*0.5

Distance travelled by car = Distance travelled by bus

(10+S)*0.25 = 0.5(S)

Divide each side by 0.25

10+S = (0.5/0.25)S

10+S = 2S

Subtract each side by S

10 = 2S-S

S = 10

Therefore Speed of Bus is S = 10 mph

Speed of car is 10+S = 10+10 = 20 mph

Average Speed  = (10+20)/2 = 15 mph

Therefore commuter average speed is 15 mph.

The Total amount spend in the year 2009 is 3518 billion dollars

Amount spend on Society Security is 20e

Amount spend on Defenced is 23e

Amount spend on other essentials is 17e

Amount spend on Medicare/Medicaid is 19e

Amount spend on Interest is 5e

Amount spend on TARP is 4e

Amount spend on other is 12e

Total amount = 20e+23e+17e+19e+5e+4e+12e

(20+23+17+19+5+4+12)e = 3518 billions

100e = 3518

e = 3518/100

e = 35.18 billion

Amount Spend on Society Security = 20e = 20*35.18 = 703.6

round off 703.6 to nearest value then 704

Amount spend on Medicare/Medicaid = 19e = 19 * 35.18 = 668.42

round off 668.42 to nearest value then 668

Therefore,

Amount Spend on Society Security is $ 704 billion.

Amount spend on Medicare/Medicaid is $ 668 billion.
