Two cells are connected in series and the circuit is completed by means of two parellel coils of resistances 7 ohms and 5 ohms respectively. One cell has an emf of 1.5V and an internal resistance of 1.2ohms and the other cell an emf of 1.1V and an internal resistance of 0.7ohms. Calculate: 1. The current through each cell 2. The current in through each coil 3. The terminal voltage of each cell

Step 1:

Two cells are connected in the series.

The emf of the first cell is 1.5 V.

The internal resistance of the first cell is 1.2 .

The emf of the second cell is 1.1 V.

The internal resistance of the second cell is 0.7 .

7 and 5 resistors are connected in parallel.

Draw a circuit with above specifications :

Contd.....

Step 2:

Find the equivalent resistance :

Resistor image parallel.

Let image is equivalent parallel resistance.

Step 3:

Find the current in the circuit :

From ohms law : image.

The current in the circuit : image.

Where image is the emf of the first cell,

image is the emf of the first cell,

image is the internal resistance of the first cell,

image is the internal resistance of the second cell,

          image is equivalent parallel resistance.

So the current in the circuit :

image

Current in the series loop is same.

Therefore, the current in each cell is image.

Solution:

The current in each cell is image.

 Step 1:

The terminal voltage of first cell :

Suppose that the battery with emf image and internal resistance image supplies a current image through an external load resistor image, then the potential difference across the battery is .

Substitute , and in .

The terminal voltage of second cell :

Substitute ,image and in .

image

Solution:

The Terminal voltage of first cell is image.

The Terminal voltage of second cell is image.

 Step 1:

The Terminal voltage of first cell is .

The Terminal voltage of second cell is .

The cells are connected in series .

The net voltage is .

The voltage in the parallel loop is image.

The voltage in the parallel loop same.

So, the voltage across each coil is same.

Current through the coil which has resistance image :

Use ohms law : .

image

Current through the coil which has resistance image :

Use ohms law : .

image

Solution:

Current through the first coil is image.

Current through the second coil is image.
