The funtion is f(x)  =  - 4x + 5

Substitute x = (a + h) in f(x)

f(a + h)  =  - 4(a + h) + 5

             =  - 4a - 4h + 5

Substitute x = a in f(x)

f(a)  =  - 4(a) + 5

       =  - 4a + 5

[ f(a + h) - f(a)  ] / h  =  [ ( - 4a - 4h + 5) - (- 4a + 5) ] / h

                                =  [ - 4a - 4h + 5 + 4a - 5 ] / h

                                =  [ - 4h ] / h

                                =  - 4

Answer :

[ f(a + h) - f(a)  ] / h  = - 4.
