(1) The inequality is y - 4 < - 1.

Add 4 to each side.

y - 4 + 4 < - 1 + 4

y + 0 < - 1 + 4

y < - 1 + 4

y < 3.

The solution of inequality is {y/y < 3}.

(2) The inequality is r + 6 < - 1.

Subtract 6 from each side.

r + 6 - 6 < - 1 - 6

r + 0  < - 1 - 6

r < - 1 - 6

r  < - 7.

The solution of inequality is {r/r < - 7}.
