Less than repesents negative, so we can use "-" symbol

algebraic expression for "four less than w" is "4 - w".

 

b.    three times the sum of x and y

times repesent multiplication, so we can use "*" symbol

algebraic expression for " three times the sum of x and y" is 3x + y.
