The data set is 4, 6, 8, 10, 12

Calculate the standard deviation by using following formula

image

Where

S is standard deviation of sample.

image  = each value in the data set.

image = Mean of all values in the data set.

N = number of values in the data set.

Step - 1) Find the mean

= 8

Step - 2) Then for each number subtract mean and square the result.

(4 - 8)2 = (- 4)2 = 16

(6 - 8)2 = (- 2)2 = 4

(8 - 8)2 = (0)2 = 0

(10 - 8)2 = (2)2 = 4

(12 - 8)2 = (4)2 = 16

Step - 3) Find the mean of squared difference.

We are calculating sample standard deviation, so instead of dividing by N, we will divided by N - 1.

                = 10
