A mixed number is a whole number plus a proper fraction, In order to change this to an improper fraction use the equation

A + B/C = ( A*C + B ) / C

This is just like adding two fractions with different denominators: you must first rewrite the two fractions so that they have the same denominator.

3 4/9 = 3 + 4/9

=( 3 * 9)/9 + 4 /9

Since denominators are same add the numerators over the denominator

= (27 + 4) / 9

= 31/9

2 5/7 = 2 + 5/7

=( 2 * 7)/7 + 5 /7

Since denominators are same add the numerators over the denominator

= (14 + 5) / 7

= 19/7
