Mixed number is a combination of both whole number and a proper fraction.

1 5/8 = 1 + 5/8

=1/1 + 5/8

To add the fractions denominators must be equal.

Rewrite the expression with common denominator

= 8/8 + 5/8

Since the deniminators are same add the numerators over the denominator.

=(8+5)/8

= 13/8
