1a).

Given chemical equation is

image.

In above equation

Z = Atomic Number.

A = Mass number = Number of Nucleons = The total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom

X = Symbolic representation of the Chemical element.

In any balanced equation

Total of mass numbers or Atomic Numbers of each molecule on Left side and right side are equal.

Equate Mass numbers both sides of given equation.

12 + 2 = A + 1

A + 1 = 14.

A = 14 - 1

A = 13.

The value for A is 13.

1c).

Chemical symbol X can be determined from the Atomic Number of the element.

From the answer 1(b)

Atomic number Z = 6.

From periodic table Carbon (C) has an atomic number 6.

The Chemical symbol X indicates " C ".
