Beta decay (β-decay)

Beta decay occurs when an atom has either too many protons or too many neutrons in its nucleus.

Negative Beta decay

In β decay, the weak interaction converts an atomic nucleus into a nucleus with one higher atomic number while emitting an electron and an electron antineutrino.

Psitive Beta decay

In β+ decay, the weak interaction converts a nucleus into its next-lower neighbor on the periodic table while emitting a positron and an electron neutrino.
