Given the following information, identify the claim, null hypothesis, and alternative hypothesis using proper notation and mathematical symbols.

WebMD claims that the mean pulse rate for females is 80 beats per minute. For a random sample of 40 adult females, the mean pulse rate is found to be 77.5.

Step 1:

WebMD claims that the mean pulse rate of female is 80 beats per minute.

After collecting information from 40 adult women it is found that mean pulse rate is 77.5 beats per minute.

Null hypothesis :

One of these statements must become the null hypothesis , and the other should be the alternate hypothesis.

The null hypothesis contains equality.

So for the above, the null hypothesis H0 : x = 80.

Step 2:

Alternate hypothesis :

The statement that does not contain equality is the alternative hypothesis.

So for the above, the alternate hypothesis Ha : x < 80.

Solution :

Null hypothesis : H0 : x = 80.

Alternate hypothesis Ha : x < 80.
