Let   f ( y ) = ( y 4- 3 y + 4 ) / ( y 2 - 5 )

y 4- 3 y + 4  is divided by  y 2 - 5.

Remember basic arithmetic : Dividend = Divisor x Quotient + Remainder.

you can use long method of dividing :

y 2 - 5) y   + 0 * y - 3 y + 4 ( y 2 + 5

          y 4 - 5 y 2______               [ Change the symbols ]

               5 y 2 - 3 y + 4

                 5 y 2 - 25                 [ Change the symbols ]

                        - 3 y + 29

Therefore Quotient is y 2 + 5 and Remainder is - 3 y + 29.
