I got a question and I have to use elimination to solve it:

5x + 4y = 56

9x - 7y = 44

How do I solve it and show work? Thanks :)

System of equations

5x + 4y = 56 ----------------> (1)

9x - 7y = 44 ----------------> (2)

Multiply Eq (1) with 7 and Eq (2) with 4 and add both of them

Eq (1) X7 =====>   35x + 28y = 392

Eq (2) X 4 =====>  36x - 28y = 176

                                71x + 0  =  568

                                          x  =  568/71

                                          x  =  8

Substitute x = 8 in Eq (1)

5(8) + 4y = 56

40 + 4y  =  56

4y  =  56 - 40

4y  =  16

y  =  16/4

y  =  4

Answer :

Solution is x = 8 and y  =  4.
