The equation is x² + 2x = k .

x² + 2(1)(x) = k

Add 1 on each side .

x² + 2(1)(x) +1 = k +1

x² + 2(1)(x) + 1² = k +1

(x+1)² = k+1

Aplly square root on each side .

x + 1 = ±√(k+1

x = ±√(k+1) -1

So the solution for the equation is x = ±√(k+1) -1 .
