Note :

  • If the ordered pairs are in direct variation, then, y/x = k (or) x/y = k.
  • For direct variation, the constant (k) has to be the same.
  • If the constant (k) is the same, then, the ordered pairs are in direct variation.

The ordered pairs are (7, - 4) and (9, 1).

Since each ordered pair is of the form (x, y), this means that the point (7, - 4) gives the values x = 7 and y = - 4.

Substitute the values x = 7 and y = - 4 in y/x = k.

- 4/7 = k → ( 1 )

Since each ordered pair is of the form (x, y), this means that the point (9, 1) gives the values x = 9 and y = 1.

Substitute the values x = 9 and y = 1 in y/x = k.

1/9 = k → ( 2 )

From ( 1 ) and ( 2 ), the constant ( k ) remains different values.

Therefore, the ordered pairs are not in direct variation.
