x^2 + 7x + 12 by x + 2 means that (x^2 + 7x + 12)/(x + 2).

x + 2 ) x^2 + 7x + 12 ( x + 5

           x^2 + 2x

      (-) ________________

                  5x + 12

                  5x + 10

             (-) ___________

                        2

Therfore, the remainder is 2.
