Elimination method

x-y = 6 --------> (1)

3x+y = -2 --------> (2)

To eliminate the y value, add the equations (1) and (2).

  x-y = 6

3x+y = -2

________

4x = 4

Divide to each side by 4.

4x/4 = 4/4

x = 1

Substitute the x value in equation (1).

1-y = 6

Subtract 1 from each side.

1-1-y = 6-1

-y = 5

Multiple to each side by negitive one.

y = -5

Solution x = 1, y = -5.
